Seed, Spade and Sword: The Bible In Context

Helping to illuminate biblical context and background

What happened to the Cedars of Lebanon? My understanding is this: they were consumed by shipbuilders. I seem to recall reading many such ships were lost at the battle of Lepanto (1577). The Cedars were gone by then and the Ottoman Navy could not be rebuild. That seems a reach. There were many more trade ships than warships and the Ottoman empire had many more sources of wood.  But treees grow hard and slow where water resources are scarce.

I'd like the history on this.

Are the cedars indeed gone?  Do any examples remain?

If so, can they be reforested?  If so: photos anyone?
